REPLACEMENT

PROCEDURE

1. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL

2. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the propeller shaft for 2WD (See page ).

(b) Remove the propeller shaft for 4WD (See page ).

3. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION NUT

(a) Using SST and a hammer, loosen the staked part of the nut.

(b) Using SST to hold the companion flange, remove the nut.

SST: 09330-00021

4. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Using SST, remove the companion flange.

5. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL

(a) Using SST, remove the oil seal.

SST: 09308-10010

6. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER

7. REMOVE REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT BEARING

(a) Using SST, remove the front bearing (inner race).

SST: 09556-22010

(b) Using SST, remove the front bearing (outer race).

8. REMOVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER

9. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER

(a) Install a new bearing spacer.

10. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION FRONT BEARING

(a) Using SST and a hammer, tap in the front bearing (outer race).

(b) Using SST and the companion flange, install the bearing (inner race). Then remove the companion flange.

11. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER

12. INSTALL REAR DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL

(a) Using SST and a plastic-faced hammer, tap in a new oil seal until its surface is flush with the differential carrier end.

SST: 09316-12010

SST: 09649-17010

Standard oil seal depth:

0.05 to 0.95 mm (0.0197 to 0.0374 in.)

Vinyl Tape

HINT:

Connect 2 SST with vinyl tape.

(b) Coat the lip of the oil seal with MP grease.

13. INSTALL REAR DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Place the companion flange on the drive pinion.

(b) Coat the threads of a new rear drive pinion nut with hypoid gear oil LSD.

(c) Using SST to hold the companion flange, tighten the nut.

Torque:

441 N·m {4497 kgf·cm, 325 ft·lbf}

or less

14. INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION PRELOAD

(a) Using a torque wrench, measure the preload.

Standard preload (at starting):

Item

Specified Condition

New bearing

1.04 to 1.69 N*m (11 to 17 kgf*cm, 10 to 14 in.*lbf)

Reused bearing

0.85 to 1.37 N*m (9 to 13 kgf*cm, 8 to 12 in.*lbf)

If the result is not as specified, adjust the preload.

15. STAKE REAR DRIVE PINION NUT

(a) Using a chisel and hammer, stake the nut.

16. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY

(a) Install the propeller shaft for 2WD (See page ).

(b) Install the propeller shaft for 4WD (See page ).

17. ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL

    Components

    Differential Carrier Oil Seal(for 3ur-fe, 3ur-fbe)
