ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK TRANSFER OIL

(a) Remove the transfer case plug (filler).

(b) Check that the oil level is between 0 to 5.0 mm (0 to 0.196 in.) from the bottom lip of the transfer case plug (filler) hole.

If the result is not as specified, add Toyota Genuine Transfer gear oil LF 75W or equivalent.

Viscosity:

SAE 75W

Standard Capacity:

1.4 to 1.5 liters (1.48 to 1.58 US qts., 1.24 to 1.32 Imp. qts.)

NOTICE:

  • After changing the oil, drive the vehicle and check the oil level again.
  • Too much or too little oil will lead to transfer problems.

(c) When the oil level is too low, check for oil leaks.

(d) Wait approximately 5 minutes and check that the oil level has not changed.

(e) Install a new transfer case plug (filler).

Torque:

25 N·m {250 kgf·cm, 18 ft·lbf}

PROCEDURE

1. DRAIN TRANSFER OIL

(a) Remove the lower transfer case protector (See page ).

(b) Remove the transfer case plug (filler) and transfer case plug (drain), and drain the transfer oil.

2. ADD TRANSFER OIL

(a) Install a new transfer case plug (drain).

Torque:

25 N·m {250 kgf·cm, 18 ft·lbf}

(b) Add oil so that the oil level is between 0 to 5.0 mm (0 to 0.196 in.) from the bottom lip of the transfer case plug (filler) hole.

NOTICE:

  • Add oil slowly.
  • Add oil a little at a time, waiting several minutes between each addition of oil.

(c) Wait approximately 5 minutes and check that the oil level has not changed.

(d) Install a new transfer case plug (filler).

Torque:

25 N·m {250 kgf·cm, 18 ft·lbf}

(e) Install the lower transfer case protector (See page ).
